Short History: Formerly a Spanish colony, Equatorial Guinea gained independence in 1968. Despite being small, it is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest oil producers.

Interesting Fact: The current president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has been in power since 1979 — making him Africa’s 2nd longest-ruling leader.
